The Government of Catalonia approves that Manresa 2022 will be a Year of National Commemoration

The celebration of the 500th anniversary of Ignasi de Loiola’s stay in the city of Manresa is gaining relevance in the country. The aim of the commemorations is to highlight, recover and disseminate the memory of historical, artistic, scientific or cultural events and personalities that have left their mark on the collective heritage of the Catalan people. This 2022 will also commemorate the centenary of the birth of the actress and announcer Maria Matilde Almendros i Carcassonne who was born in Manresa.

The Generalitat de Catalunya has approved this Tuesday that Manresa 2022 will be a Year of National Commemoration. With this distinction, the project - which celebrates the 500th anniversary of Ignatius of Loyola’s stay in the city - acquires relevance at the national level and ensures the explicit support of the Generalitat in the development of its actions.

The aim of the commemorations is to highlight, recover and disseminate the memory of historical, artistic, scientific or cultural events and personalities that have left their mark on the collective heritage of the Catalan people. At the request of Manresa City Council, the proposal has been drawn up by the Commemoration Commission, the collegiate body responsible for promoting and proposing the events and personalities that must be commemorated by the Generalitat.

The news has been very well received by the Mayor of Manresa, Marc Aloy Guàrdia, and the City Councilor for Tourism and City Projection, Joan Calmet Piqué, responsible for Manresa 2022. Both have assured that the support of the Generalitat shows that the project is well worked out and has a route, both in the city and in the country. The tourist promotion of the Ignatian sites of Manresa and the projection of the Ignatian Way are two key elements that are emerging as a basis for new opportunities for the city.

The program was presented this November. It contains more than a hundred activities. One of the most important activities is the International Forum on Interreligious Debate, which will address climate change from a youth perspective, at a meeting to which Pope Francis has been invited. Also noteworthy are the actions that strengthen the Basque Country - Catalonia connection, the beginning and end of the Ignatian Way, and the cultural and musical performances, with the Israeli singer Noa, the Orfeón Donostiarra, the Symphony Orchestra of the Gran Teatre del Liceu, Sílvia Pérez Cruz, Carles Cases, Manel Camp, the Escolania de Montserrat and Jordi Savall, among others.

In addition to the 500th anniversary of Ignasi de Loiola’s stay in Manresa, this 2022 will also commemorate the centenary of the birth of the actress and announcer Maria Matilde Almendros i Carcasona, who was born in Manresa.
